I'm committing to a post a day. My friends, Tara and Tyler, are biking around the world and blogging their adventures. If THEY can do it daily, I better. :) I'm shooting for just a slice of this great strange dream I'm living; hoping you savor it.
Today I felt well enough to keep an appointment in Burlington. I've been working on a a tattoo for a year now on my lower back. My friend Keenan, who I met through camp exclamation point, is the artist. When I got there he remarked, "Hey, didn't we start this on February 13th last year?". We had.
A full year to the day later I now have two fully colored trees with firey bellies. Their limbs are great and billowy, their roots vast and spreading to the point where they can "hold hands". There is plenty of space between them as they grow. The space makes a heart shape on my unmarked skin. It's beautiful. Like all of my tattoos it reminds and celebrates. This specific one reminds me of what love truly is for me, how it works for me now at 30 years of age.
Love is not about manipulation, power, or approval. It's about the feeding and giving forces of life which if smothered out have no space in which to make love. It's about being alive together.
Happy soon-to-be Valentine's day. Know that I hold that loving space for you today, tomorrow and always.
PS I'll post a pic soon.
